Phil Neville agrees terms to become new Inter Miami manager

Exclusive – Phil Neville is set to take his first step into club management after agreeing to take the reins at Major League Soccer side Inter Miami.

The England Women coach was set to take charge of Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics this summer. But having decided to leave his role with the Lionesses this year, he will now make the move to America.90min has been informed that, while nothing has been signed, it is now a ‘formality’ Neville will take charge of Inter Miami after club owner and fellow Class of 92 star David Beckham convinced him to take the plunge.

Neville has been looking at opportunities and has had numerous approaches from around the world since it was announced he would be leaving his role as the Lionesses’ coach.

Negotiations with Beckham, who is a co-owner of Salford City with Neville, included the topic of further investment and the addition of more star names to Inter’s roster. They are already one of the biggest spenders in MLS, with former Juventus and Real Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain joining the club last year.

Diego Alonso was recently relieved of his duties as Inter Miami manager, having taken charge of the club’s maiden season in MLS. Despite the summer’s high-profile arrivals, the club endured a torrid start to the campaign, losing all of their opening five games.

Their form picked up a little after a turbulent opening to the season, though they could still only muster a disappointing tenth place finish in the Eastern Conference. The poor showing ultimately cost Alonso his job.
